1er Cru Burgundy!

Across the valley and south of Maranges, at the southern end of the Côte d’Or, another belt of vines begin. This is the Côte Chalonnaise, home to five appellations named after five different communes. The best known of these is the village of Mercurey, named after the messenger of the Gods in Roman mythology.  The wines here merit attention not only due to their quality but also because of their value. Domaine du Suremain is a seven-generation Burgundy estate located in the center of the village. The fruit from the 2013 1er Cru En Sazenay comes from a 2 hectare vineyard contiguous to the domaine. A higher percentage of clay here contributes to the wines more formidable structure. The wine is sustainably produced. This wine, 100% Pinot Noir, is austere, peppery and spicy. It has a very long expression on the palate, with perceptible aromas of blackberry and blue bramble. This wine will age 5-10 years at least, and will pair wonderfully with roast beef and mature cheeses. Only 200 cases produced.
