89 Point Wine Enthusiast Magazine

I Brand & Family Wines is a small producer in the Monterey Bay area of California’s Central Coast making wines from vineyards within a 100-mile radius of their Salinas winery in Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito and Santa Clara counties. Wines are made with an eye for showcasing the best qualities of what proprietor and winemaker Ian Brand feels is an under-appreciated winegrowing region, as he searches beyond the traditionally esteemed sites and focuses on fortuitous alignments of soil, slope, aspect and variety.

This wine is produced predominantly from a few vineyards at the base of Jack’s Hill, planted on the distinct iron oxide granite that dominates the east side of the Salinas Valley, directly east of Sleepy Hollow North. Clone 4 and 76 on 101-14 and 3309 rootstock, 35-year-old Wente clone on unknown rootstock (nobody remembers what it is). Also blended with small lots of Chardonnay clone 17 (also Wente) from the northern Santa Lucia Highlands, Italian clone Chardonnay from the granitic sands of Arroyo Seco, and 42 year old shot Wente clone off calcium rich alluvium. All cool to cold climate.

In scoring this wine an 89 Points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine had this to say: Hints of lime blossoms, toasted nuts and wood smoke show on the nose of this very fairly priced bottling, whose previous vintages have been shown to age magically. Wood-fired pears and apples show on the palate, which will please both those seeking a bit of oak and those who enjoy a racier style of Chardonnay.
