2019 Domaine Poulvarel Costières-de-Nîmes "Le Grés"
91 Point Rhone Blend!
Domaine Poulvarel is located near the famous Roman aqueduct called the Pont Du Gard, built in the 1st century CE in Southern France (SW of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.) Elisabeth and Pascal Glas, accompanied by their daughters, took over the estate in 2004. Together they took up the daring challenge of restoring the estate to its former glory and reviving the vineyard. After rehabilitating the vineyard, they built a contemporary cellar, designed with stones from the Pont du Gard and modern cladding allowing an optimal temperature for maturing and conservation. Since then, the wines of the Domaine de Poulvarel have not ceased to be cited by the specialized press and rewarded during international competitions. It was Pascal who transmitted his passion for the vine to Elisabeth and they continue to develop the vineyard and the marketing of their vintages.
You can imagine the 2019 "Les Gres" as a sort of beefed up Chateauneuf-du-Pape in style (darker, more powerful and energetic), with a wildly diverse basket of Mediterranean flavors....strawberry, tapenade, fennel, savory black cherry, dark plums, plum sauce, sweet spices and a big round, wild texture, with great freshness, verve and length.
In scoring this wine a 91 points, Wine Enthusiast’s Anna-Christina Cabrales said, “This wine delivers intense aromatics reminiscent of strolling through a pine forest after a quick rain shower. Fresh leaves wrap around Bing cherries and rhubarb, followed by a bouquet of rose petals and dried lavender. It finishes with a fine stony texture. Lush and quite enjoyable on its own, this wine will surely impress dinner party guests. 91 points."
