The Backsberg story is both ancient and modern, a cultivated pairing of heritage and care. As a winery of over 100 years, Backsberg Family Wines celebrates a pioneering spirit that has led to four (now five!) generations of proud South African Jewish family ownership.

At its heart, the philosophy remains to provide enjoyment to a broad range of wine lovers by sustainably crafting world-class quality wines. As South Africa’s first certified carbon-neutral winery, Backsberg has cemented its reputation as a respected steward of the land that honours the past whilst forging ahead with forward-thinking holistic principles.

A combination of trellised and bush vines from both Wellington and Paarl regions. Pinotage grapes are picked before they are fully ripe at 21 degrees. The red fruit is processed similarly to a white wine. The grapes are crushed and pressed, followed by a cool fermentation in stainless steel. Red fruit flavors of cherry and strawberry give way to minty freshness gleaned from earlier picked fruit. Lightly tinted from red grape skins, this salmon hued wine is fruity and juicy on the palate. Low in tannins, it displays delightful notes of melon, ripe tropical fruit and strawberry.

Pair with seafood dishes and salads or enjoy with light lunches. The perfect partner to Mediterranean platters of olives, cheese, charcuterie and French bread.
